Hamburger is made from beef and gets its name from Hamburg, Germany, the place where it originated.
In the middle Ages, the Tartar people from the Baltic countries , scrapped raw meat and added salt, pepper, onion juice to it and ate what they called 'Taratar steak'.
Merchants traveling from Hamburg to this place liked this dish and brought it to Germany, where it became 'hamburg steak' . Later the meat was cooked and then used.
Hamburg steak became very popular and a doctor in England, Dr.Salisburg used to prescribe it to his patients suffering from anemia , asthma , colitis and other ailments, giving Hamburg steak the name Salisbury steak in England.
Hamburg steak came to America along with German immigrants who settled in the Cincinnati area in the 1930s.
In the early 1900s bun was added to the steak creating the famous American hamburgers. Today , the leader in mass-production in Hamburgers is the McDonald's which began selling them in 1955.
