I tried that Shrink app but I couldn't get used with the smaller icons.

Yeah. I keep mine at about 80%, that way I can still see the icons and my background

Cool.
How do you make it animated and will it slow down the system significantly?

I like to see my background more too but somehow it feels weird to see my icons shrink.
