New digital music format could replace the MP3
A new digital music format, unveiled January 24 at the MIDEM festival, is being called "the successor to the MP3" by its creators and others in the industry. The new media extension, MusicDNA, allows owners of an MP3 file to access additional updated content, including lyrics, artwork, tour dates, blog posts, videos, and Twitter feeds.

Among its benefits for the music industry, MusicDNA could help to deter digital piracy: Only legitimately purchased MusicDNA tracks are dynamically updated, while pirated versions remain as static files. With the release at MIDEM of a high-profile report by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry calling for a crackdown on digital piracy, MusicDNA could provide a crucial and timely solution.

MusicDNA files are readable in any MP3 player. The additional content, sent from music labels, artists, or retailers, appears alongside the MP3 and automatically updates whenever the player is connected to the internet.

MusicDNA is created by BACH Technology and is backed by technology partner Fraunhofer IDMT, the developer of the MP3.

An international Beta launch is set to begin this spring.

Oasis nominated for three NME awards despite split
Oasis showed they are gone but not forgotten today after landing three nominations at the NME Awards, including best British band - despite splitting five months ago.

Arctic Monkeys, whose third album Humbug topped the charts last year, have the highest hopes for next month's event after landing nods for six awards.

Kasabian are their biggest challengers with five nominations, while Muse clock up four.

Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys go head-to-head in five categories - Best British Band, Live band, Album, Video and the new 'giving it back' award which recognises acts who are generous to fans.

Making up the best British band category for the music paper's annual awards are Muse and Biffy Clyro.

Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys said: "It's a good thing knowing we're still up for these awards - Kasabian have said that there aren't any other proper rock bands apart from us and them. I don't necessarily agree completely but I know what they're saying. I think we're just co-existing nicely."

Oasis fell apart last year when guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher quit the band after years of bickering with his frontman brother Liam. But NME readers have shown they are still fond of the band by voting them on to the shortlists for best video, best live event and best British band.

Despite female acts making a huge breakthrough in the past year - with Florence And The Machine and Lady GaGa landing four Brit Award nominations each last week - the shortlists are overwhelmingly skewed towards male guitar acts.

However Florence did land three nominations for the Shockwaves NME Awards 2010, while GaGa and La Roux both landed a pair each.

The prized best album title will be fought between Arctic Monkeys' Humbug, Kasabian's West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, Muse's The Resistance, the Cribs' Ignore The Ignorant and The Horrors' Primary Colours.

NME editor Krissi Murison said: "The NME Awards is the one ceremony where you see the bands who have really meant something and made a difference get justly rewarded.

"So alongside deserving big names like Muse and Arctic Monkeys, there's also younger, influential artists like The Horrors and The Big Pink and the great thing is, there's no predicting which way the fans will vote."

The best live event of the past year will be fought between Blur's reunion show at Hyde Park, Jay-Z at Alexandra Palace, Muse's homecoming show at Teignmouth in Devon, Oasis at Heaton Park, Manchester and The Dead Weather's Halloween show at Shoreditch Church in east London.

Winners will be announced at the Shockwaves NME Awards on February 24 at the O2 Academy Brixton, in south London.

    D.Ramirez news round-up

Sheffield’s iron, steel, and coal industries declined 30 years before car production in Detroit, but when it comes to electronic music, they have much more synergy.

Perhaps it is the cities’ industrialism itself, the essence of which Adam Smith defined as the specialisation of labour, that sparked its inhabitants’ curiosity in repetitive machine-driven music.

Detroit’s Mathew Hawtin, who is the younger brother of techno DJ Richie Hawtin, may have unknowingly encapsulated the theory in his recent Beatportal interview.

“When I was growing up, a lot of my summer jobs were actually in the automotive industry, in really industrial places,” said Mathew Hawtin.

“I was working in these jobs which were really repetitive, screwing bolts together for four hours on assembly lines. So maybe this had an effect on me. There’s definitely some comfort in repetition for me.”

It cannot be mere coincidence, that both Detroit and Sheffield, two cities with a rich industrial past, punched well above their weight when electronic music first arrived in the 1980s.

Detroit of course, gave us techno. And Sheffield’s electronic music clout belies its relatively small population of just over half a million. The South Yorkshire city has produced a surprising number of synth pop and electronic bands including The Human League, Heaven 17, ABC, and Cabaret Voltaire, as well as give us one of electronic music’s most important labels - Warp Records [l].

More recently in the late ‘90s, Sheffield kick started the UK’s trance revolution (and to a greater extent, the world’s), via its audacious superclub Gatecrasher, which mysteriously burned to the ground in 2007.

It comes as no great surprise then, that D.Ramirez, Sheffield’s rising dance music star, will launch a new record label in the coming months that pays homage to the city which is rightly proud of its electronic music heritage.

Eminem's "Recovery" album is due fewer than three weeks away, and the rapper has unveiled its official tracklist -- including its A-list collection of guest contributors -- on his Log in to see links.

Rihanna, Pink, Lil Wayne and Kobe each contributed vocals to the "Relapse" follow-up, with Dr. Dre, Just Blaze, DJ Khalil, Mr. Porter, Jim Jonsin, Alex Da Kid and Boi-1da as producers.

"Recovery" contains a whopping 16 tracks, with its current single "Not Afraid" sitting near the middle. The video has been shot, with its premiere imminent, out some time on Saturday (June 5); Eminem told Paris radio station Skyrock FM yesterday (June 2) that "The overall concept is basically just being in a dark place and trying to get to the light."

On his esteemed guests: "As far as the songs with Pink and Rihanna ... when I did the song that I did with Pink, I laid my parts first and kind of heard her on the record and felt that she would smash this record. And the other one I did with Rihanna is one of those tracks that I felt like only she could pull it off, only she could do it."

Here is the tracklist to "Recovery":

    1) Cold Wind Blows
    2) Talkin’ 2 Myself (featuring Kobe)
    3) On Fire
    4) Won’t Back Down (featuring Pink)
    5) W.T.P.
