    Review

“The Sims” franchise has been around for nearly 20 years starting off as a basic simulation game for all ages. Since its debut The Sims has expanded into “The Sims 2” and now EA has added “The Sims 3” to its list of achievements.

“The Sims 3” gameplay builds on the foundation of The Sims 2 with a free roam neighbourhood now available to players. Players will gain access to shopping locations, work locations and neighbouring houses. From these selected locations you can socialise, buy recipes, produce and items you will need for completing goals and ultimately looking after your Sim.
Depending on your chosen “trait” your Sim will have several goals to complete. Some goals will be as simple as meeting a new friend, whereas others many require skills. Along with skills, The Sims 3 now offers mini-games, which if completed without errors your Sim will gain a small amount of skill. For example, if your Sims television has broken you can choose the option “fix” once selected you will have to complete a mini game. If you are successful you will be rewarded with a small amount of skill in repairing.

Just like in The Sims 2, where you created a Sim and customized it to your preferences, The Sims 3 offers the same basics: appearance, clothes, etc. Though now you’ll also have the option of choosing your Sims “traits”. Each trait you pick will also give you different actions and goals. There are 6 you can choose from, each impacting on how friendly you are towards others or whether your main purpose in life is to be a “big spender”.
Apart from customizing your Sim you’ll also be able to customize your home. Simply by clicking on the phone and selecting “buy furniture” you’ll be able to pick from different tables, beds, couches, etc. By completing goals and progressing through the game you will also be able to upgrade your house. If you’re a Sims fan you’ll enjoy the adjustments that EA has offered, though to an average gamer the game lacks depth. The Sims 3 offers a lot more options to work with, but it doesn’t build on the fundamentals making it a game that can become easily tedious.

The Sims 2 was the first Sims game to be introduced onto mobile and it wasn’t bad for a debut. Though The Sims 2’s graphics were average at best, EA has made an effort and improved upon them in The Sims 3. Character models are quite well done as they perform actions with ease and also have expressions. Still the animation is one aspect that could have been improved upon, with many of the same actions/animations simply copied from The Sims 2.

If you’ve ever played the PC version of The Sims, then you would be familiar with the main menu music. The Sims 3 main menu features a remixed, polyphonic version of the light hearted and catchy Sims music, though it seems to loop continuously which is a bit annoying. Sound effects in The Sims 3 are nothing special; select an option and all you hear is a chime.

    Conclusion

To wrap The Sims 3 in a nutshell, it’s an entertaining game but only for a short amount of time. It is also quite repetitive and the goals seem to be never ending.

The_Dead_Man and I have decided to celebrate the upcoming new release of Splinter Cell: Conviction. We are going to review two old splinter cell titles.

The_Dead_Man (Dip) will do Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow 3D

and my next review will be Splinter Cell: Double Agent
