I guess Joseph is the second layer...
So just put a gradient on a second layer

its not bad at all silver, we all start from somewhere, just try to find tutorials on the net and try to do them and then you will know how to make graphics better

Tried that. Just puts a gradient under the text Stupid GIMP.
