It's only some sort of time-trial. After two hours you have to register yourself online - but without being charged apart from the data transfer. After the registration you still can play the game for free - in five more solar systems or so.

If you want to go further - dive deeper in space and time - you have to buy the game - but to give it a very deep first look, you don't have to pay anything, which is not at all normal

Yes, I think you will have to connect time to time ( short period ) , but allways , not each time
