Widget - Battery Widget by Elvison
Battery Widget
by Elvison
Device version: 16 GB WiFi only
Android OS version: 4.2.2
ROOT: No
Widget: Battery Widget by Elvison
Cost: Free
Widget Version: v3.2.1a (@ the time of writing this post)
Installation size: 2.73 MB total
Compatibility: Excellent
Functionality: After trying several battery widgets I decided that this particular one is the one that will stay on my Nexus 7. It is by far not the prettiest around , but its minimalistic features make it a perfect light weight widget with enough functionality to alert the user that the battery charge is running low. YES , it will pause a game and sound off/show a pop-up notification that the battery is low (by default @ 15% battery charge left). After confirming the notification the user can continue playing if desired. Additional information include battery voltage , temperature , health status , battery type/technology , current status (charging or discharging) and battery use. The shown information is being read from the Android system itself and then shown within the GUI of the Widget insuring low , if any , possibility of faulty readouts.
Recommendation: Try it

Android OS version: 4.2.2
ROOT: No
Widget: CPU Stats by takke
Cost: Free
Widget Version: v1.2.0 (@ the time of writing this post)
Installation size: 1.20 MB total
Compatibility: Very Good
Functionality: CPU Stats is a light weight widget with a simplistic , aesthetically non intrusive look. One can opt to be show a CPU load indicator which consists of 4 columns (one for each core) and 5 bars (3 green,1 orange,1 red - indicating each cores load level) resulting in a simple and clear quick view at the CPU's current load. By pulling down the status bar additional information in form of CPU load percentage for each core is show. As a option the current CPU's frequency can be displayed in the status bar , although only one frequency is shown (not the current frequency of each core!).
Recommendation: Try it if You are curious about Your Nexus 7's CPU load
Note:
CPU Stats by takke is not showing any CPU load in form of a screen overlay during game plays!

Cost: Free
Application Version: v7.8.4 (@ the time of writing this post)
Installation size: 5.55 MB total
Compatibility: Very Good
Functionality: Seems to do exactly what it's supposed to , identifying all relevant components within the Nexus 7 from detailed CPU information , over RAM and GPU info , all the way to a quick CPU benchmark showing Your device's result compared to others. All mentioned is very nicely packed into a colorful animated UI and comes at a acceptable file size.
Recommendation: Try it if You are interested what Your Nexus 7 packs under the hood

Application - Navfree: Free GPS Navigation
Navfree: Free GPS Navigation
by Navmii
Device version: 16 GB WiFi only
Android OS version: 4.3
ROOT: No
Application: Navfree: Free GPS Navigation by Navmii
Cost: Free , Ad-Supported , In-App purchases (voices,speed camera data,POI's)
Application Version: v2.1.17.12063 (@ the time of writing this post)
Installation size: 142 MB total (depending on installed maps)
Compatibility: Excellent
Functionality: This app is great considering it is free (not counting the advertisements which are not shown if the device doesn't have network access). Navfree features map data from OpenStreetMaps (OSM) and a limited number of voice guidance languages. Updated maps can be downloaded through the app when available (quarterly updates). I was pleasantly surprised by this apps clean look and the relatively good English voice guidance (Croatian is not available). Though many smaller street names and most house numbers are not available for my countries map I think that the app is worth giving a try. With more free navigation applications like this those premium Nav-app developers (not to be named!) might at least consider lowering those overinflated asking prices.
To conclude: if You need a truly error free and reliable navigation software then Navfree might not satisfy Your needs and desires. On the other hand , if You already posses any sort of car navigation (like I do) and are interested to widen the usage of Your Nexus 7 being unwilling to pay huge bucks , then Navfree is a great choice (as long as Your country is supported with the necessary files).
Recommendation: Get it
Resources required determined with CPU Logger by ECNApps:
CPU Utilization: 46% peak (~18% average)
Memory: 103 MB peak (~ 100 MB average)
Network Utilization: RX: 873KB , TX: 108KB
Note:
- This application does not require Network access!
- Advertisements are not show during active routing (without network access)
- keep in mind that OSM maps are user generated map data , as such they will become more precise only through user inputs/contributions!
Battery Percent Enabler for KitKat & Lollipop
Are You fed up with having to use third party apps to see Your Nexus 7's remaining battery charge?
I sure was!
Download Battery Percent Enabler from the store , run it and check the box , restart Your Nexus 7 (do NOT force close "Battery Percent Enabler"!) and enjoy the look of the now altered battery icon.
After having successfully enabled the percentage feature You can force close the app and if deemed necessary remove it from Your Nexus 7.
To disable the percentage view just run this app , UN-check the box and restart Your Nexus.
According to the developer this app does not add anything to the system , instead it enables an option that is already implemented within KitKat and Lollipop just not turned on!
Those of You that are still running KitKat on Your Nexus 7 will see the systems battery icon featuring remaining battery charge in white numbers making it impossible , or at least hard to determine the remaining percentage as long as it is over about 60%.
Those who run Lollipop will have the numbers show in grey , making it significantly easier to identify the shown numbers!
To precede some questions that seem to be popular within this apps comments section read the following:
- supported operating systems : Android KitKat & Lollipop (I can confirm that it works nicely on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop)
- no ROOT needed
- the battery icon is the original one from within the Android OS , its size , color and position can NOT be altered
- the percentage numbers are also part of the Android OS , thus they are "as is"
- to ENABLE : run this app , check the box , restart Your Nexus 7 - now You can stop and remove the app without loosing the battery percentage
- to DISABLE : run this app , UN-check the box , restart Your Nexus 7 , remove the app
