I think if you really put in some effort you should be able to.

But it's a WHOLE lot easier in Photoshop. And Fireworks.
And Corel.

I wouldn't knock GIMP.
It's a good stepping stone.

I wouldn't use it personally, but for non-pirates and people who can't afford Adobe, it's a good app.

I used it once...
