[FAQ] How to make your own MP3 Ringtones

Method 1: Make MP3 Ringtones Online using our Online MP3 Ringtone Maker

Method 2: Make MP3 Ringtones Offline using the instructions below.

Requirements:

• Audacity (Free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder that converts MP3,WAV, Ogg Vorbis and more)
• lame_enc.dll (Download and unzip it to your Audacity installation folder - C:\Program Files\Audacity\)

Instructions for Audacity 1.2.6:

1. On your computer, select the MP3 song you would like to use, Right click > Open with and select Audacity
2. Select the area of the MP3 you would like to use as your ringtone (click Edit > Cut, now click Edit > Select > All, then click Edit > Paste)
3. Specify the quality of your ringtone: Click Edit > Preferences > File Formats. I recommend 96 kbps (44100 Hz); Although, 56 or 64 kbps (22050 Hz) may be better if your phone restricts ringtones over a certain file size. Here you can also specify the MP3 Library version: Click Find Library, then navigate to and select the lame_enc.dll
4. Set the Project Rate (bottom left of main window) to 44100 (for 96 kbps or higher ringtones) or 22050 (for 64kbps or lower ringtones)
5. File > Export As MP3

1. On your computer, select the MP3 song you would like to use, Right click > Open with and select Audacity
2. Select the area of the MP3 you would like to use as your ringtone (click Edit > Cut, now click Edit > Select > All, then click Edit > Paste)
3. Specify the MP3 Library version: Click Edit > Preferences > Import / Export > Click Find Library, then navigate to and select the lame_enc.dll
4. Set the Project Rate (bottom left of main window) to 44100 (for 96 kbps or higher ringtones) or 22050 (for 64kbps or lower ringtones)
5. File > Export
6. Click Options - Here you can specify the quality of your ringtone (I recommend 96kbps; Although, 56 or 64kbps may be better if your phone restricts ringtones over a certain file size).
7. When done, click OK, then click Save (Make sure you select Save as type as MP3).

Once your ringtone is created, you can transfer it to your phone via USB Cable, Bluetooth or put it straight onto your Memory Card (if you have a card reader). If you do not have a USB Cable or Bluetooth, you can upload it to our wapsite HERE, and download it via your phone for free (carrier charges apply).

I recently got the new Samsung Blackjack and have been putting stuff on it like crazy. The MP3 ringtones on this site all seem to work fine, so I thought I'd try my hand at creating my own since the song I want is next to impossible to find. I created a 47 second MP3 clip of the song using Atomix Virtual DJ. Here are the stats...

Duration: 0:00:47
Bit Rate: 64kbps
Channels 2(stereo)
Audio Sample Rate: 44khz

these are identical to the You're Not Alone-4835 (by Olive) ringtone on your freetones page (which plays perfectly on my phone). Problem is my tone I created won't play for some reason. Is there something else I'm missing? I also have another mp3 ringtone purchased through Cingular of WuTangs - C.R.E.A.M. however it's format is .mp3-drm (should I be using something to convert them to this format instead?)

Also, i cant imagine what it could be which is stopping you playing it... Sounds like a problem with the way it was recorded? Have you tried listening to the shortened mp3 in windows media player or anything? What track was this?

As for the mp3-drm.. im not too sure what that is about... You can convert it to mp3 using RMToMP3Converter.

If this doesnt work, you can always request tones for free and someone will be happy to help...

I've been trying to upload a file that I ran through Audacity with 44100Hz and a bitrate of 64. Then wen I go to upload it says that it has a sampling rate of 24000 and its not acceptable... Any ideas?

I have a program named "mp3 to ringtone gold".It can shorten the mp3s and make their size appropriate for a cell phone.If you want you can download it and you'll be amazed. :wow: :)

Hey all, I'm pretty new to this site, but I may be able to add to what Karl has posted here. If you are one of the few that have a phone that is limited in space, then try using Creative's WAVE STUDIO, if you an up-to-date version, it supports MP3 conversions. I have creative a few Ringtones and uploaded to this site. One way to make the file smaller is to convert it from stereo to Mono, try different rates I.E change it from 44 khz to say 22 or even 11 if you need an ultra small file. You can actually create a ringtone that is 30 seconds long and only be around 60kb the rate for this is 18kps and 11khz mono. It sounds pretty decent for being so compressed.

I am using Audacity v1.2.6 and nowhere under File -> Preferences -> File Formats can you change the Bitrate to 56. Where?

What version are you using, Karl? First of all, Preferences is under the Edit menu not File. And, in preferences I cannot find a 56 bit rate. It tops out at 32. Is there something wrong with my machine???

Sorry I haven't replied earlier. I'm using v1.2.3 which is why the Preferences is under file. I'm not sure why you can't find 56 bit rate. What sound card do you have?

I see. I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi card.

I want to make a crystal clear ring tone from an MP3 file. Is this possible using Audacity or will I need a better program like Reason or Sound Forge?

Also, how does one create a ring tone using the built-in MIDI synthesizer? I have seen websites with musical notes written in cellphone code. How do I type the notes and save them as a ring tone? I would prefer it since the polyphonic sound is much cleaner and more audible than playing a large music file.

i have changed everything to the format it should be at except fot the bitrate. it seems to be locked in the format screen at 128. any suggestions....

From what i know mp3-drm is copy protection which is the reason that man could not play his track..

Many digital music services employ digital rights management (DRM) — also known as "copy protection" — that prevents you from doing things like using the portable player of your choice ..

but not a 100% sure

Downloaded the program, thanks for that, but was wondering...I have a Nokia Xpressmusic 5310. Now, some of my PC MP3 take up a lot of space as they are 328 kbs and such. I take it this program will lower that and also, how low should I go to avoid it being too low and preserve quality (Or as much quality you can get with a low bit rate MP3...:laugh:).

Don't go below 128 kbps, if you don't want loss in quality. 160kbps is a safe bet.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for what I have to say, and I don't know how important it is anyway.
I uploaded a ringtone before some minutes, and I forgot to write the name of the band. I know it's not that important, but it's bother me when I'm thinking about the ppl who will try to find this song, or songs of that band.
And my question is if there's any way to change the name, and add the name of the band.

I have an LG 385 and i have a memory card with my music on it, but i dont know how to actually set it AS my ringtone.
i went into ringtones and selected downloads, but my music isnt in there, and i don't know where i'm supposed to find it to set it as my ringtone.

Hey Karl :wave: i use Audacity Beta, i really like it! and i have been mixing songs for over 3 years now! currently i am using Acapella songs with a different instrumental and that worked well :wow: i have uploaded my mixes on youtube as well :)
